Royal Shadows

On Saturday afternoon, Mikayla noticed this amazing shadow (a crown) on the family room carpet:

A few minutes later, she noticed this shadow (a castle!) on the carpet in the living room:

I don't think we could have planned for this. None of these shadows were reflections of what they looked like. For example, the "flag" portion of the "castle" is actually a wooden goose that sits on the window ledge. What wonderful awareness children have.

A Rebus Story

Last week we read a rebus book, Rebus Riot, that really caught Mik's attention. I didn't know just how much until she wanted to dictate a story and included heart stickers in several places in her story. I'm not sure she got the idea perfectly, but she was trying.

A page from Rebus Riot

Mik's "rebus" page

The round sticker is a macaroni face person, thus the unlikely change in the focus of the story. When you have a macaroni sticker, your rebus person is a macaroni person, right?
Notice at the bottom of her page, she wrote "Will you be my friend" inserting dashes in between the words. She now asks me to spell words for her. When I told her she needed to leave a space between words, she began to physically write in a space, even though I did show her how to leave a blank space the size of her finger to separate words. She has done this several times and I talk to her about it each time. She WANTS to put in the dashes. Children are so concrete. Consider-the meaning of the word SPACE. She has never seen written sentences with actual space markings between words, so I wonder what made her think to use the marks.
